Chasing New York City
You know those dreams that you have, the one day dreams? New York has been a one day dream for about 10 years.
I loved the thought of going to NYC but never seriously pursued it until late November 2018.
In less than 5 months I have saved and planned and in just a few days I am embarking on my very own solo adventure to NYC.
Over the last few weeks I have had moments where I can’t believe this is happening but as I write this, I can believe it because I worked hard to make it happen.
I wanted to share with you how I was able to achieve this goal in a short amount of time and show you that it’s nothing really that special, it’s simply focus, consistency, and work.
Here is a list of things I did to turn my dream into a reality:
- I made the decision that I was going to go to NYC
- I shared my goal with my Hubby and got his buy in. We are are a team so we both needed to be on the same page.
- I reached out to my family as I was going to need their support with the kids to make it happen. I am so lucky to have a family who encourages me to chase my dreams.
- I changed my wallpaper on my phone and laptop with a picture of NYC so it was front of mind all the time.
- I followed the #newyork hashtag on instagram so NYC was constantly in my feed
- I read lonely planet books on NYC and listed out all the things I wanted to do
- I read blogs on NYC, what to do, what not to do, tips and tricks and where to eat.
- I created a NYC playlist and listened to it on repeat – so much so my kids know every song by heart now
- I watched movies and TV series that were set in NYC
- I booked flights through a travel agent for more accountability before I even looked or secured accommodation (If I had looked at how expensive accommodation was, in all honestly I may have backed out!)
- I talked about NYC often. To my clients, to my family, to my husband, to my friends, to my kids.
- I asked for people who had been to NYC for their experience, advice and suggestions
- I had the kids involved with the logistics of who was looking after them etc so leaving for 3 weeks would be easier on both of them and myself knowing they are happy and excited to be picked up after school by the various people helping me out.
Taking ALL of these step just keep ingraining into my subconscious that going to NYC was happening. Period.
Plus why not? Why not throw everything you’ve got at it, every little bit has got to help in the pursuit of your dream right?
I want to share with you what I didn’t to because I think these are just as important:
- Listen to people who thought I was crazy to leave my kids for 3 weeks
- I didn’t question my ability to make it happen – I just did it
- Didn’t feel guilty for chasing a dream that was just for me and not for my husband and kids, instead I encouraged my husband to do more of what he wanted to do and showed my kids that it’s important that they chase their own dreams
- I didn’t let other ‘life’ things distract me and seed doubt in my mind
Why am I sharing all of this with you?
Because I want YOU to know that you can achieve ANYTHING you set your mind to. You just need to decide what you want and figure out the how later.
The life you want to create is on you!
You can have anything you want as long as you are prepared to show up for it every single day.
